LIndbergh wins 22nd Annual Joe Carenza Memorial Tournament

The 22nd Annual CYC Joe Carenza Girls High School Tournament had plenty of big saves. None bigger than those provided by Oakville, Mehlville and CBC high school. The tournament was originally scheduled to start on Monday, April 25th, with all games being played at the Soccer Park. However, at 2pm on that Monday, we got a call from the Soccer Park saying they had to pull up their turf fields because the Meramec River was rising! So we had no fields to play on, and even if we could get grass fields, those were too wet. Becky Czuppon (with a big assist from Dave Robben), Bob Kern and Mike Bartoni were contacted Tuesday, and made their fields available for the tournament to proceed. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Not only from the folks at the CYC but from the 9 teams and coaches in the tournament.

Once under way, most games were very competitive, including 3 overtime games, 2 of those were decided by penalty kicks. In the end, the Lindbergh Flyers defeated Collinsville 3-0 in the championship game. Oakville took 3rd place over Webster Groves. On the consolation side, Rosati Kain scored with less than 2 minutes in the final game to tie the score. Then scored the game winner 1 minute into the first overtime period. Congratulations to the champions and thank you to all teams that participated and endured rain, last minute changes and rising flood waters.

If you like soccer and want to continue playing in the fall of 2011, have you considered playing in a CYC High School Soccer league?  Each fall the CYC has a number of high school girls and boys teams compete in various leagues throughout the city and county.

If you are interested, here is all you need to know:

  • Teams composed of all freshmen and sophomores would apply to play in the Juvenile division.
  • Teams with juniors and/or seniors would apply to play in the Junior division.
  • The season runs from mid-September to mid-November, with playoffs in late November.  Most games are played on Sunday afternoons, with occasional games on Saturdays.
  • Teams should be parish sponsored, but maybe made up of players from many different parishes.  Often times, high school teams are made up of friends from the same high school.  Many teams are formed after high school tryouts have been completed.
  • Boys who play for their school team (C-team, B-team, JV or Varsity) are not eligible to play.  However girls that play for their high school team may participate, since their high school season is in the spring.
  • Players do not have to have a CYC ID card, but do need a photo ID.  That could be a CYC ID card, drivers license or school ID, if it has a photo.
  • Each team is required to have an adult coach on the bench at all times.  This adult must have attended Protecting God's Children class, signed the Code of Conduct, and have had a Missouri Background check.  This will be verified when you present your roster to your sponsoring parish for signature.
  • For more information contact Buzz Swanston at buzzswanston@archstl.org or call 353-8911 ext. 13.

Click on the titles below to download the forms you will need to apply for a team, and the information you should know when applying.  The deadline to apply for a High School team is FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6.  Send all applications and rosters to CYC Sports, Attn: Buzz Swanston, 4354 South Kingshighway, St. Louis, MO.  63109.

We are looking forward to a great high school soccer season.  We hope you and your friends will join us!

April 26 - May 1, 2010

Monday April 26th - All ten teams opened the Tournament with first round games at the Soccer Park.  Luckily games were scheduled on the turf, so week-end rains did not cancel any games.  However light rain fell during all the games.  All five games were decided by one goal.

In the tournament opener, Rosati-Kain advanced to Wednesday night's semifinal game by defeating Seckman 2-1.  The next two games were 1-0 affairs, Collinsville over Washington in regulation, and Oakville winning in the first overtime against Trinity.  Collinsville will face Oakville in a semifinal match-up on Wednesday at 7:30pm.  Granite City scored in the first 10 minutes of it's game, and held on to defeat Lindbergh 1-0.  Duchesne broke a 0-0 tie with a goal in the second overtime.  Duchesne and Granite City will play Tuesday night at 7:30, with the winner advancing to play Rosati-Kain in Wednesday's other semifinal game at 7:30.

Tuesday April 27th - The tournament featured 2 consolation games followed by a quarterfinal game on the championship side.  After being shutout in Monday's opening round game, Washington rebounded with a 6-1 victory over Trinity.  The Jays will face Duchesne in one consolation semifinal on Wednesday.  Lindbergh, also shutout on Monday responded with a 3-0 win over Pacific.  Lindbergh now faces Seckman in the other Consolation semifinal.  The quarterfinal game between Granite City and Duchesne was an exiting, hard fought game.  The Granite City Warriors jumped on top quickly with a goal only three minutes into the game.  The Pioneers got the equalizer early in the second half, on a penalty kick.  Granite City netted the winner with only nine minutes left in the contest.  Granite City will play Rosati-Kain in one championship semifinal, while the other features Collinsville and Oakville, both games will be played at 7:30 Wednesday night.

Wednesday, April 28th - It was semifinal night at the Soccer Park.  In the Consolation semifinals, Duchesne defeated Washington 3-1 and Lindbergh blanked Seckman 6-0.  Those two winners advance to Saturday's noon consolation finals.  On the championship side of the bracket, the two Illinois teams advance to face each other in the finals.  Collinsville turned three first half goals into a 3-0 victory over Oakville, while Granite City scored it's first goal 3 minutes before half, then added 2 more in the second half for a 3-0 victory over Rosati-Kain.  Saturday's championship final had to be postponed, the new date and time has yet to be determined.

Saturday May 1st - After lightning and thunderstorms cancelled two games Friday night, teams returned to play in beautiful weather Saturday afternoon at the soccer park.  Washington scored three first half goals and held Seckman to only one goal in the second half to post another victory for the Jays.  In the third place game Oakville scored it's first goal at the 8 minute mark.  The Tigers then got a second goal but saw Rosati-Kain score early in the second half.  Rosati-Kain threatened to even the score as they pressed forward in the second half.  Finally a header from the Tigers, with less than a minute left in the game sealed Oakville's 3-1 win.  Lindbergh prevailed in the Consolation Championship with a hard fought 2-1 victory over a relentless Duchesne team.

Congratulations to all the teams that participated in the 21st Annual CYC Joe Carenza Tournament.  There were some excellent games, and the girls displayed outstanding sportsmanship through out the week long tournament.  We also want to thank AC St. Louis and Athletica for rewarding the 6 teams that played Saturday with tickets to the professional soccer teams in town.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Championship game between Collinsville and Granite City will not be played.
